Is it for you?

Six requirements, no small print

If you tick these boxes, the international remote work residence fits you. In the strategy session we check it against your documents.

  • You work remotely for outside Spain

As an employee, only for companies outside Spain. As a freelancer, you can have Spanish clients as long as they are no more than 20% of your work.

  • You have a degree or experience

A university, vocational or business school qualification, or at least three years of experience in your field.

  • Your work relationship is at least three months old

With the company or your clients, before you apply, and with permission to work remotely.

  • The company has been active for at least a year

It needs to show real, continuous activity over the last year.

  • Income of at least €2,849 a month

That is 200% of Spain's 2026 minimum wage, as applied by the UGE. An amount is added for each family member.

  • No criminal record and health insurance

No criminal record in the countries you've lived in, and health insurance from an insurer authorised in Spain.

2026 minimum income

How much you need to earn

Calculated from Spain's 2026 minimum wage (Royal Decree 126/2026) over 12 months, following the criterion applied by the Large Companies Unit (UGE). The main applicant provides the income.

Who's comingPer monthPer year
Just you€2,849€34,188
You and your partner€3,917€47,004
Couple and one child€4,273€51,276
Couple and two children€4,629€55,548

First family member: +€1,068 a month. Each additional member: +€356 a month. Figures change when the minimum wage is updated; we check them for every case.

Two routes

From your country or from Spain

Picking the right route changes how long your permit lasts, the timelines and where you need to be while it's decided.

From your country

Visa at the consulate

  • You apply at the Spanish consulate in your country of residence.
  • The visa lasts up to 1 year and already lets you live and work in Spain.
  • Before it expires, you apply for residence from Spain to stay on.
  • The consulate has 10 working days to decide, unless extra checks apply.

From Spain

Residence through the UGE

  • If you're already in Spain legally, for example as a tourist within your allowed stay.
  • The permit lasts up to 3 years and renews for 2-year periods.
  • It's filed online and the UGE has 20 days to decide; no answer means approval.
  • While it's processed, your current stay or residence is extended.

Why applications fail

Mistakes we avoid

  1. Applying with less than three months of work with the company or clients.
  2. A company with less than a year of activity, or no documents to prove it.
  3. A contract that doesn't say the job can be done remotely.
  4. As a freelancer, billing more than 20% to Spanish clients.
  5. Income that's too tight, or poorly documented, for the number of family members.
  6. Applying from Spain while staying there irregularly.
  7. Criminal record certificates without an apostille, or translations that aren't sworn.

FAQ

What everyone asks

Can I work for Spanish companies?

As an employee, no: only for companies outside Spain. As a freelancer, yes, as long as what you bill Spanish companies is no more than 20% of your work.

How long does it take?

From Spain, the Large Companies Unit has 20 days from filing to decide, and if it doesn't answer in time the application is deemed approved. At a consulate, the general deadline is 10 working days. Add the time needed to gather documents, apostilles and translations, which is usually the longest part.

Can I apply if I'm already in Spain as a tourist?

Yes, if you're in Spain legally, meaning within the time your stay allows. If you've overstayed, this route isn't available and we need to look at another one.

Can my family come?

Yes: your partner, your minor children or adult children who depend on you, and dependent parents. They can apply with you or later. Your income has to cover the whole family.

What health insurance do I need?

Public insurance, or private insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain. We tell you which cover to check so the insurance doesn't trigger a request for more documents.

Do I pay tax in Spain?

If you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, you'll usually become a Spanish tax resident. There's a special regime for relocated workers that may suit you. For the tax side we work with a specialist firm: if you need it, we put you in touch so you can review it before applying, and start with both your residence and your taxes set up properly.

What happens when it expires?

If you still meet the conditions, you renew it for two-year periods. If you came with a visa, you apply for residence from Spain before it expires.
