Is it for you?

Six requirements, no small print

If you tick these boxes, the non-lucrative visa fits you. In the strategy session we check it against your documents.

  • You won't work in Spain

No employment or self-employment, and no remote work either. If you want to keep working remotely, your route is the digital nomad visa.

  • Funds of at least €2,400 a month

That's 400% of Spain's IPREM index for you, plus 100% for each family member, for the whole year of the permit. Savings or regular income both count.

  • Health insurance

Covering you in Spain, and each family member coming with you, from day one.

  • No criminal record

In every country you've lived in over the last five years, with the certificate apostilled or legalised and translated.

  • Passport and medical certificate

A passport valid for at least one year and a medical certificate showing you have no serious public-health diseases.

  • You apply from home

At the Spanish consulate for where you live, not from Spain, and never while staying in Spain irregularly.

2026 financial means

How much you need to show

Calculated from Spain's 2026 IPREM index (€600 a month): the regulation requires 400% for the main applicant and 100% for each family member, for the whole period of the permit. You can show bank balances or regular income such as a pension or rental income.

Who's comingPer monthFirst year
Just you€2,400€28,800
You and your partner€3,000€36,000
Couple and one child€3,600€43,200
Couple and two children€4,200€50,400

Each family member: +€600 a month. These are minimums: the more comfortable and better documented your funds, the stronger your application.

How it works

Consulate first, then Spain

The non-lucrative visa is always applied for from your home country. Once you land, the second part begins: your residence card and renewals.

Step 1 · At home

Visa at the consulate

  • You apply at the Spanish consulate for where you live; the residence permit is included in the visa application.
  • The immigration office has one month to decide; no answer means refusal.
  • Once the permit is granted, the consulate has one month to issue the visa.
  • We prepare your full application, ready to file at your consulate.

Step 2 · In Spain

Residence card and renewal

  • Within a month of arriving, you apply for your foreigner identity card (TIE).
  • The first permit lasts one year and renews for two-year periods.
  • You apply to renew in the two months before it expires.
  • To renew, you need to have lived in Spain for more than 183 days a year.

Why applications fail

Mistakes we avoid

  1. Assuming you can work remotely: you can't, that's what the digital nomad visa is for.
  2. Funds that are too tight for your family, or don't cover the whole period.
  3. Foreign bank certificates missing the details the regulation asks for: bank, accounts, balance at 31 December and average balance for the last year.
  4. Health insurance that doesn't cover every family member coming with you.
  5. A criminal record from one country when you've lived in several in the last five years.
  6. A passport with less than a year of validity when you apply.
  7. Not living in Spain for more than 183 days a year, and running into trouble at renewal.

FAQ

What everyone asks

Can I work remotely on a non-lucrative visa?

No. The non-lucrative visa is for living in Spain without any employment or professional activity, including remote work. If you want to keep working for companies or clients abroad, the route is the digital nomad visa.

How much money do I need?

400% of the IPREM index a month for the main applicant, €2,400 in 2026, plus 100%, €600 a month, for each dependent family member, for the whole period of the permit. For the first year, a single applicant needs to show about €28,800.

Where do I apply?

At the Spanish consulate for where you live. It can't be applied for from inside Spain. We prepare your full application, ready to file.

How long does it last?

The first permit lasts one year. It then renews for two-year periods, as long as you keep your funds and insurance and have lived in Spain for more than 183 days a year.

Can my family come?

Yes: your spouse or registered or long-term partner, your minor children, and adult children with a disability or who depend on you for health reasons. Each family member adds 100% of the IPREM to the funds you need to show.

Does the Golden Visa still exist?

No. The investor residence under Law 14/2013 was abolished in 2025. If you wanted to move to Spain without working here, the non-lucrative visa is usually the alternative.

Will I pay tax in Spain?

If you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, you'll usually become a Spanish tax resident and be taxed on your worldwide income. For the tax side we work with a specialist firm: if you need it, we put you in touch before you apply.
